Using essential oils for love and romance is as old as time. Some essential oils are used as aphrodisiacs but they are used most commonly to create or enhance a romantic atmosphere.
The distinctive smell of essential oils comes primarily from flowers, leaves, herbs, spices, and tree bark resin from which they are sourced. Do you love the smell of roses, sandalwood, jasmine, vanilla, or frankincense? Well, those wonderful smells are the aromatic compounds in essential oils.
Essential oils give your perfume, colognes, scented candles, and lotions their distinctive smell. So, when you smell the aromatic compounds in essential oils, they stimulate the limbic system in your brain. Now, here’s the interesting part. The limbic system is associated with our instincts and emotions. In short, the smell of the essential oils temporarily shifts your mood and emotions.

How to Use Essential Oils for Love and Romance
There are several ways to use essential oils for love and romance. And, the good news is that you already have most of these items at home.
Use in Aromatherapy Diffuser
My favorite way to use essential oils is in an electric diffuser. Add essential oils to an aromatherapy/essential oil diffuser in your bedroom or bathroom to surround yourself with the fragrance for a few hours. The diffuser is a device in which you put water and a few drops of essential oils. For safety reasons, follow the instructions. Additionally, you should check to see if the diffuser automatically stops after a given time. For example, it may run for 30 minutes and then automatically shut off.
Use in Massages
All of us enjoy massages. Since the skin is our biggest organ, it means that there are a lot of places to apply massage oils and lotions infused with essential oils. So, here is how they work. The molecules in the essential oils are so small that they penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, they circulate throughout the body to the area targeted for treatment.
You can make your own massage oil by adding a few drops of essential oils to carrier oil. Great carrier oils for massage include:
- Sesame
- Sunflower
- Almond
- Grapeseed
- Avocado
- Argan
- Jojoba
- Coconut
You can also add the essential oils to an unscented body lotion and create your signature blend.
Apply to Pulse Points
Do you dab or spray perfume on your wrists, neck, or chest? Well, without knowing it, you are applying them to your pulse points. Essential oils are absorbed quickly at the pulse points. So, the pulse points are where the blood is closest to the skin. Remember to mix the essential oils with a carrier oil. Some of the pulse points are:
- Inside the wrists
- Behind the ears and temple
- Along the lower jaw
- Back of the neck
- Across the forehead
- On the chest
- On the abdomen
- At the bottoms of the feet
- On the inner elbows
- Behind the knees
- Up and down the spine
- Top of feet
- Along the groin
Add to Bath
Friday evenings are my bubble bath time. If you enjoy taking a relaxing hot bath, then consider adding a few drops of essential oils to carrier oil. Add 10 to 12 drops of essential oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil. Now, you don’t want to miss these safety tips.
- Don’t add pure essential oils into the hot water. And, that’s because the drops can stick to your skin and irritate it.
- Combine the essential oil with a carrier oil and then add it to the tub of water. This causes the essential oils to be dispersed throughout the water rather than just sit on top of it. So, gently stir the water.
- Do not add while the water is running since this will cause the fragrance to scent the bathroom rather than the bathwater. Wait until the tub is full before adding the essential oil.
- Get out of the water carefully to prevent falling.
