Woman smiling repeating affirmations for weight loss

Weight loss affirmations can be a key element in your weight loss journey. If you’ve read any of my previous blogs on weight loss, you know that I do not recommend any specific plan. I have provided you with tips on how to jump-start your weight loss. Additionally, I have shown you how to refocus your goals to keep the weight off.

Regardless of the meal plan that you choose or the exercise program that you start, you have to decide or affirm your decision to lose weight each day.

What are Positive Affirmations for Weight Loss?

Positive affirmations are statements or phrases that you use to replace or challenge negative self-talk. Negative self-talk, or unhelpful thoughts, sometimes feel like a broken record playing in our heads. Or, they can be thoughts of failure or self-doubt. And, this is where repeating affirmations can help.

Now, you don’t want to this. According to Walter Jacobson, M.D., a psychiatrist, affirmations reprogram our subconscious mind and help us to manifest our desires. And, in this case, you want to manifest losing weight and keeping it off.

When to Practice Affirmations for Weight Loss?

So, how often and when should you practice affirmations for weight loss? Well, to get the most benefit from affirmations, you need to make repeating them a daily practice. I recommend that you commit to a 21-day program. At a minimum, repeat each affirmation 10 times when you wake in the morning and before you go to bed. However, I also recommend repeating them at midday and whenever you feel stressed, overwhelmed, and weak.

You will need to write or type them and put them where you can easily find them. I have them on a note on my phone and tape them to my bathroom mirror. And, don’t forget that sticky notes can also help. However, the thing that has really worked best for me is to write them every day as a journal entry.

Affirmations for weight loss--commit to reaching my goals

One: I Am Committed to Reaching My Goals

This is one of the most important affirmations for weight loss because you need to be committed to losing weight and keeping it off. As you know, losing weight is half the battle. And, maintaining a healthy weight after you’ve lost a significant amount of weight is tough.

The key to committing to your weight loss goal is to be specific about your goal. As I mentioned in setting SMART weight loss goals, goals are different from desires. A goal is an intention that is followed by a plan of action. So, that means that you must put your goals in writing and read them every day.

Example of SMART Weight Loss Goal

“I plan to lose 10 pounds in the next 2 months.  To reach my goals, I will weigh myself daily and write it in my journal or enter it in my Fitbit app.  Once I lose 10 pounds, I will re-evaluate my successes and challenges and set a new goal of 10 more pounds for continued weight loss. Losing weight is important to me because it will help to lower my high blood pressure.  It will also help me to be a great role model to my kids.”

Affirmations for weight loss--crush my goals

Two: Today is A Good Day to Crush My Goals

Don’t wait for New Year’s Day, your birthday, or a big event to start your plan. Today is a good day to start repeating your affirmations for weight loss. Yes, you can put a date on the calendar to start your new meal plan or exercise program. However, you can get into the right mindset today by repeating these affirmations for weight loss.

Yes, tomorrow is another day to crush your goals. But, let’s start with one meal at a time today.

Affirmations for weight loss--persist

Three: I Will Persist Until I Succeed

We are in this for the long run, and we will not give up. Is your meal plan not working? Then, tweak it. Having a hard time going to the gym in the morning? Then, go after work.

The key is to continue to try and move forward. Some days will be better than others, and that’s OK. Just commit for today and persist hour after hour. And if things get really bad, repeat this affirmation for weight loss and persist every half hour.

Four: I Will No Longer Use Food to Comfort Myself

Are you a stress eater? Do you comfort or soothe yourself with food? If so, then these affirmations for weight loss are really important. For many overweight individuals, food is their go-to thing when they feel tired, bored stressed, underappreciated, or burnt out.

In a previous post, I identified 9 types of stress eaters. And while there is no quick-fix for stress eating, you have to come up with ways to comfort yourself other than with food.

Five: Food Cannot Feed An Empty Heart

This affirmation for weight loss is closely related to the previous one. Only love can fill an empty heart. Now, you don’t want to miss this. We have different types of hunger. However, food can never satisfy our hunger and craving for love, intimacy, and friendship. Only, love can fill an empty heart.

So, find ways to deepen your self-love because food cannot fill an empty heart.

Six: I Love The Body that I Have Right Now

Now, I fully believe that when your body feels loved, it cooperates with you on your weight loss journey. But, the fact is that we have convinced ourselves that we would be more loveable if we were thinner.

Did you know that the average American woman wears a size 12? But, in the media, you do not usually see women who look like you and me as the lead character. I guarantee that if you don’t love your body now, you won’t love it if you lose 10, 20, or 50 pounds. Why? Because you will always find fault with some part of your body—nose, feet, butt, eyes, or something else.

So, start loving your body where it is right now. One of the ways that you can do so is by practicing self-compassion. According to Dr. Kristen Neff, self-compassion involves treating and speaking to yourself the same way you would to someone you love who is having a difficult time or is saying something unloving to herself.

Seven: I Embrace My Curves and Thickness

Just look around you. Our community is filled with women with beautiful, thick curves.  One of the things that women usually tell me is that they want to lose weight but keep their curves and a little “thickness.” Yeah, some of the curves got a little bigger after childbirth, but they help us to celebrate life.

Now, if you’re a full-sized or plus-sized woman, this is one of the important affirmations for weight loss. So, go ahead embrace your curves and thickness while you commit to your weight loss journey.

Eight: I Am Not Ashamed of My Body

How long have you struggled with your weight? Have you gained so much weight that you have difficulty finding attractive clothes that fit? Maybe you have further to go on your weight loss journey than some others.

Being ashamed of your body can lead to depression and other mental and emotional issues. Shame sets up a vicious cycle that leads to overeating, gaining more weight, and being ashamed again.

This is one of the important affirmations for weight loss because it gets you out of that shame-based cycle. Don’t join with your haters. Look in the mirror and say, “It is what it is. This is me, and I am not ashamed of my body.”

Nine: I Choose to Eat Healthy Foods

Eating healthy is a choice, and some days are more difficult than others. As you know, it is not a matter of not having healthy foods in the house. From experience, I know that I have pushed aside the kale, broccoli, and Greek yogurt to get to the candy bar that I hid from myself in the refrigerator.

But, we have the opportunity to pause, take a deep breath, and repeat an affirmation when we’re tempted. And, it will get a little easier with practice.

Ten: I Am Improving Every Day

This is one of the affirmations for weight loss where we focus on the small wins. You’re getting better every day, including the days when you fall flat on your face.

So, that means we celebrate the small wins such as:

  • Eating 2 cookies instead of 6
  • Getting a small order of French fries instead of a large
  • Ordering a small salad with lunch instead of chips
  • Having one scoop of ice cream instead of a large bowl
  • Exercising while watching TV when you didn’t make it to the gym
  • Going to bed on time and skipping a late-night snack

Eleven: My Mind and Body Are Working Together

Practicing this affirmation for weight loss eventually leads to a “big aha” moment. You believe and feel your mind and body working together. Your cravings no longer hijack your brain. Furthermore, it allows you to get back on track after a temporary relapse.

Twelve: I Have Faith that I Will Achieve My Goals

I am a person of faith. And, for me, my faith is the biggest factor that has helped me to achieve any of my goals. I have to trust that God will help me to take care of my body/temple because willpower has never been enough.

So, this is what faith looks like for me when I’m trying to stay healthy:

  • Reading the Bible and other inspirational messages
  • Writing in my journal
  • Praying throughout the day
  • Listening to inspirational music
  • Pausing to breathe deeply a few times a day
  • Practicing gratitude
  • Asking for help
  • Telling someone my goals and having them hold me accountable

Thirteen: I Am Passing Down A Legacy of Good Health

Our community needs a mind shift and a new paradigm for thinking about legacy. We celebrate our music, food, history, art, and heritage. More important, we continue to pass these traditions and legacies to the younger generations.

However, few people think of good health as a legacy. This is one of the affirmations for weight loss that focus on one of the reasons why you want to get to a healthy weight. Now, please don’t miss this. I am not saying that weight is the sole or most important determinant of health. But, being at a healthy weight involves changing eating habits, exercising regularly, managing stress, etc. It also can prevent and manage chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and some types of cancer.

So, focus on being a role model for your children, nieces, nephews, and others in the community.
