Avocado oil is one of the best cooking oils for making healthy, flavorful meals. In addition to having a mild taste and high smoke point, it is a heart-healthy oil. Avocado oil is an excellent monounsaturated fat, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E source.  Additionally, it has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. So, have you ever thought of using avocado oil to soothe and heal your skin? Avocado oil is also essential in many cosmetics and skincare products because it has anti-aging, detoxifying, and regenerative properties. Now, you don’t want to miss this point. Cold-pressed, organic avocado oil quickly absorbs into the skin without leaving a greasy residue.  It also works well on all skin types, especially dry ones. After you read about the benefits of avocado oil for the skin, you’ll love it so much that you’ll want to apply it from head to toe.

Avocado Oil Benefits for Dry and Itchy Skin

One of the most common uses of avocado oil is to calm dry, itchy skin. These are common symptoms of dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis, sensitivity to laundry detergents and soaps, or allergic reaction to a medication. Dry, itchy skin is not fun, and if you scratch a lot, you run the risk of scarring your skin. So, apply avocado oil to the skin at the first sign of dryness.

Avocado Oil Benefits for Rough and Chapped Skin

Dry skin often turns into rough, chapped, or cracked skin.  Extreme hot or cold water, dry air, often swimming in chlorinated water, and soaking too long in hot water often results in rough, chapped skin.  Elbows, knees, hands, and lips are susceptible to chapping.  Use avocado oil in the morning, evening, and as needed during the day.

If you notice cracked skin, it means that the skin barrier has been damaged.   Cracked heels are a common complication of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.  Daily use of avocado on the heels helps to prevent dry, cracked skin.  If you have diabetes and notice cracked heels, contact your doctor immediately.

Reduce Signs of Aging with Avocado Oil

The fatty acids in avocado oil increase skin elasticity and help reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging.  Additionally, avocado oil may boost collagen metabolism in the skin, making you appear younger.

Protect Skin from Ultraviolet Rays

Now, this is a surprising benefit of avocado oil.  Avocado oil contains beta carotene, protein, lecithin, fatty acids, and vitamins A, D, and E, which protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays.  Although avocado oil may protect against sunburns, it should not replace your sunscreen.

How to Use Avocado Oil on Skin

The main benefits of avocado oil for the skin are that it soothes and moisturizes.  Use it every day or a few times a week.

  • Add a few drops to the bathwater
  • Massage a liberal amount into the skin after bathing
  • Add a few drops to your favorite body lotion
  • Create a “super” skin oil by mixing it with coconut oil, olive oil, tea tree oil, emu oil, shea butter, or vitamin E oil
  • Massage into dry cuticles and nail
  • Massage into the scalp to prevent and treat dry, itchy scalp
  • Mix with your moisturizing cream and apply before going to sleep at night
  • Apply to face for 10-15 minutes as a hydrating mask
  • Pour a few drops on a cotton ball or pad to remove makeup
  • Heat for a few minutes in the microwave and use as a hot oil hair treatment
  • Use as a leave-in conditioner
  • Mix a few tablespoons with brown sugar for an exfoliating body scrub
  • Apply to lips before going to bed

Safety and Side Effects of Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is safe to use on adults, children, and babies.  Test any skincare product on a small area of your leg or arm to rule out any allergies.  If you’re allergic to avocado, you may be allergic to avocado oil. That is true for me and walnuts and walnut oil.
