Yoni oil is trending and flying off the shelves of online stores. However, women have been using and enjoying the benefits of yoni oil for centuries. Indeed, there is a difference between basic feminine hygiene and a little extra vaginal health and self-care.
In fact, the care and keeping of our vaginal health differ by age, sexual activity, and health status. For example, older women in menopause often use yoni oil to relieve vaginal dryness and itching. On the other hand, some women use yoni oil after shaving and waxing.
Now, this is important. The vagina is not a dirty organ. Indeed, it naturally self-cleans and self-maintains itself when we consume a healthy diet, drink adequate amounts of water, and bathe regularly. This article describes the many benefits of yoni oil, when and how to use it, and where to purchase it. It also gives some natural home recipes to make your own DIY yoni oil.
What Is Yoni?
Yoni is an ancient Sanskrit word that means “source,” “womb,” and “female genitals.” In other words, it is the origin or source of everything. Wow.
While it is fun to learn the different words for vaginas in other cultures, I love the fact that yoni means more than just the “thing between our legs.” Or, heaven forbid, referring to our most intimate, sacred source of femininity and womanliness as the “down-there region.”
What Is Yoni Oil?
Yoni oil is a blend of natural carrier oils infused with essential oils. It is used as a part of feminine hygiene and vaginal self-care. Although yoni oils make excellent lubricants, women use them primarily to moisturize the labia major and mons pubis.
The essential oils and aromatic compounds used in yoni oil come from herbs, flowers, fruits, and even tree bark. The essential oil blends used vary based on the type of yoni oil and its purported benefits. For example, a yoni oil used for soothing the skin after shaving or waxing may contain tea tree oil and clary sage essential oils. On the other hand, one for vaginal dryness may contain chamomile and lavender. Most yoni oils have a mild, pleasant scent. They are also available unscented.
Yoni Oil Benefits for Vaginal Health
There are numerous benefits of yoni oil for vaginal health and feminine hygiene. Additionally, many yoni oils make great all-over body oils, massage oils, and after-shave moisturizers.
Moisturizes and Increases Elasticity of The Vagina
The vagina naturally does an excellent job of shedding dead skin cells. However, the rate at which our body sheds old skin and gains new ones slows with aging. For example, the body sheds old skin about every 14-20 during our teen years. However, it takes about 60 days or longer as we move into our 60s. Thus, it is necessary to exfoliate and moisturize the skin regularly. The same goes for the yoni. Regular application of yoni oil moisturizes the yoni and keeps it healthy and youthful. Indeed, many yoni oils reduce dryness and increase the elasticity of the vaginal walls.

Soothe Minor Burns and Abrasions
Yoni oil is great for use after shaving or waxing the bikini area or other body parts. Indeed, shaving and waxing remove skin cells and often cause minor cuts, burns, or abrasions.
Prevents Ingrown Hair
Many women get ingrown hair after shaving and waxing the bikini area. Some yoni oils are specifically made to soften, moisturize, and prevent ingrown hair.
Treat Vaginal Infections?
Surprisingly, many blogs advocate using yoni oil to treat bacterial and yeast infections.
No way! Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you believe you have a bacterial or yeast infection.
Yoni Oil Brands We Like
There are many brands available online. Some are for general-purpose use, and others are for treating specific conditions. They all use organic ingredients and maintain a healthy PH level in the vagina. Here are some that we like:
DIY Yoni Oil
It is easy to make your own yoni oil. In fact, many of you already have some of the ingredients at home.
1. Choose Your Carrier Oils
First, you need an organic base or carrier oil. You can also blend several carrier oils. Great carrier oils include:
- Olive oil
- Avocado oil
- Jojoba oil
- Coconut oil
- Apricot oil
- Grapeseed oil
- Sweet almond oil
- Argan oil
- Vitamin E oil

2. Choose Your Essential Oils
Second, add one or two essential oils to create a beautiful blend. The essential oils you use depend on how you intend to use the yoni oil.
I make yoni oil in 6-ounce batches and use 10-12 drops of essential oils. Here are some essential oils that are blended with a carrier oil to make yoni oil:
- Lavender essential oil (soothing, general purpose)
- Rose essential oil (soothing, general purpose)
- Jasmine essential oil (soothing, general purpose)
- Chamomile essential oil (soothing, general purpose)
- Evening primrose essential oil (soothing, general purpose)
- Slippery elm essential oil (moisturizer, anti-inflammatory)
- Tea tree essential oil (antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, use sparingly)
- Neem essential oil (antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, use sparingly)
- Peppermint essential oil (antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, use sparingly)
- Lemongrass essential oil (antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, use sparingly)
3. Add Essential Oils to Carrier Oil
Third, combine the carrier oil and essential oils in a mason jar, glass, or ceramic bowl. Stir 8-10 times, making sure to scrape the sides of the bowl.
4. Store in a Glass Bottle or Jar
Fourth, store the yoni oil in a glass jar. Many recipes call for a brown bottle or jar to prevent exposure to ultraviolet light (UV). UV light changes the chemical composition and increases spoilage. However, brown or amber glass bottles and jars are not always readily available. If you cannot find a dark jar or bottle, use a small, clear glass jar or a small, plastic thick-walled jar.
- 4-ounce amber glass jar with lid
- 2-ounce glass jar with lids
- Mini jars with cork lids
- 1-ounce clear plastic cosmetic jar with lids
Yoni oil makes excellent gifts. If you plan on doing so, go ahead and splurge on the dark jars. And don’t forget to include a note on the ingredients and how to use the oil. The smaller jars are great for traveling.
5. Do a Spot Test
Fifth, it’s always important to do a spot test to detect allergies and sensitivity. First, I do a spot test on the back of my hand or inner wrist and wait for 10 minutes. If all goes well, I test it on a small spot on my inner thigh before going to bed.
How to Use Yoni Oil
There are many ways to use yoni oil. Notably, women use the oil to:
- Massage the yoni
- Increase sexual pleasure and achieve better orgasms
- Reduce vaginal dryness and itching
- Ease painful sex
- Reduce in-grown hair in the bikini area
- Treat minor irritations and infections
- Relieve menstrual cramps
- Increase body awareness
Yoni Oil Massage
Surprisingly, many women do not regularly massage their yoni. Indeed, we get foot massages and body massages. However, yoni massages are noticeably absent from our self-care. The massage relaxes the mons pubis, increases blood flow to the labia and clitoris, and heightens sexual awareness.
A yoni massage can be a stand-alone therapy and should not be rushed. The ultimate goal is not sexual pleasure. However, it can also be an elaborate form of foreplay that produces a powerful release. The massage can be done alone or with a partner.
5-Minute Yoni Massage
- Add a few drops of yoni oil to the palm of your hands
- Rub hands together to warm the oil
- Rub 5-6 circles around your navel
- Repeat the first two steps
- Rub circles as you move down to the top of the pelvic bone
- Add a few drops of oil to your three inner fingers
- Massage several circles around the mons pubis, moving right to left
- Add a few drops of oil to your three inner fingers
- Massage small circles below the mons pubis above the clitoral hood
- Add a few firm strokes back and forth on either side of the clitoris
- Add a few drops of oil to your three inner fingers
- Use firm downward strokes on the outside of the right labia major down to the tailbone
- Repeat on the outside of the left labia majora
- Add a few drops to the forefinger and middle finger
- Massage up and down the inner folds of the labia majora
- Add a few drops of oil to the forefinger and middle finger
- Use back-and-forth strokes to lightly massage both of the labia minora (inner lips)
- Lightly stroke the opening of the vagina
- Rub hands together and cup the entire vagina for a few seconds
- Enjoy!
General Vaginal Lubricant
The carrier oils listed above are safe for vaginal dryness in older women due to hormonal changes and menopause and in younger women using birth control pills. My gynecologist recommends using plain coconut oil at bedtime. However, I also blend it with avocado oil and vitamin E oil.
Directions
- Put a little coconut oil or other carrier oil on the tip of the forefinger
- Massage around the entrance of the vagina
- Put a few more drops on the forefinger
- Insert the finger in the vagina and rotate for a few seconds
Please check with your gynecologist, nurse practitioner, or womb care specialists about using coconut oil or any other carrier oils in the vagina.
Note: Pregnant women should not insert anything in their vaginas unless their healthcare provider recommends it.
Prevent Ingrown Hair
Yoni oils that contain tea tree oil, clary sage oil, neem, rosemary, oregano, and lemongrass soften hair follicles, reduce redness, soothe skin, and prevent ingrown hair on the face, underarms, or bikini area.
Directions
- Rub a few drops of oil into freshly waxed or shaved areas
- Repeat a few hours later or as needed
Sexual Pleasure Lubricant
Some yoni oils are marketed for sexual pleasure. However, I recommend using water-based lubricants rather than oil-based lubricants for sexual intercourse. And why is that? Well, while yoni oils are easier to spread, they can be a little messy. Furthermore, oil stains are hard to remove from sheets. Additionally, oil-based lubricants should not be used with condoms.
On the other hand, water-based lubricants are safe when using condoms, and they do not stain sheets.
Instead, use yoni oil for a massage as part of foreplay.
Now, It’s Your Turn
Well, I hope you feel more educated about the benefits of yoni oil for vaginal health and self-care. How you use yoni oil depends on your age and specific health needs. For example, menopause presents several challenges due to changes in hormonal levels. Thus, older women often use yoni oil as a lubricant for vaginal dryness.
Please note that this information is not meant to contradict advice from your healthcare provider. Talk to your healthcare provider before using yoni oil to treat any vaginal health issues. Most importantly, discontinue using it if you experience burning or irritation.
