“I AM.” These two simple words hold tremendous power. How often do you use them? And do you use them intentionally? More importantly, do you know that when you change your words, you change your world? Indeed, as mentioned in a previous post, “You are what you say about yourself.”
As we aim to be more successful in our professional and personal lives, it’s important to understand that success is not just about working harder or smarter. Undeniably, confidence and clarity are key elements of success. “I AM” statements give us both, acting as anchors when the going gets tough.
Here’s something crucial to note. Dr. Walter Jacobson, a psychiatrist, states that affirmations have the ability to rewire our subconscious minds, aiding in bringing our desires to fruition. By embedding our psyche with “I AM” affirmations, we’re setting ourselves up for success.
What Are “I AM” Statements?
“I AM” statements are positive and affirmative declarations we use to define or empower ourselves. They begin with “I am,” followed by a positive attribute or intention. These two powerful words have spiritual roots. Notably, the Christian faith is rooted in the seven “I am” statements of Jesus in the Book of John.
- I am the Bread of Life (John 6:35)
- I am the Light of the World (John 8:12)
- I am the Door (John 10:9)
- I am the Good Shepherd (John 10:11,14)
- I am the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25)
- I am the Way and the Truth and the Life (John 14:6)
- I am the True Vine (John 15:1,5)
Over time, the power of “I AM” spilled over into other spiritual practices, self-help movements, and therapeutic settings.
Today, we use them as personal development, self-awareness, and goal-attainment tools. Indeed, many people use them as mantras to encourage and empower themselves. Mental health professionals encourage using “I AM” statements to combat and counteract negative self-talk. We all have that inner dialogue, right? And sometimes, the negative dialogue sounds like a loop of pessimistic thoughts playing in our minds. So why not use “I AM” affirmations to override these unhelpful narratives?

How to Use I AM Statements
So, when’s the best time to practice “I AM” affirmations? For optimal results, make them a daily ritual. I suggest you embark on a 21-day challenge. Start and end your day by repeating an affirmation at least ten times. Additionally, recite them around noon or when you need an extra confidence boost.
To keep them at your fingertips, jot them down where you’ll see them frequently. Make them visible, whether it’s a digital note on your phone, a centerpiece on your vision board, or a taped note on your bathroom mirror. I’ve found great success by penning a new affirmation atop my daily journal entry.
But here’s a key takeaway: Merely reciting these affirmations won’t bring transformation—you need to believe in them genuinely. While affirmations are powerful tools, they’re most effective when paired with proactive efforts. Incorporate them into your success strategy; remember, they’re most potent when they resonate deeply with you.
